Notion AI: The Productivity Upgrade You Didn’t Know You Needed
Notion has been our go-to workspace for years. When they added AI, we expected a gimmick — a chatbot bolted onto a productivity app. Instead, we got something genuinely useful: AI that lives inside the tool where you already do your work.
After 8 months of daily use, here’s what’s worth your money and what’s still half-baked.
What Notion AI Actually Does
Unlike standalone AI tools that require you to switch contexts, Notion AI operates within your existing pages, databases, and workflows. Highlight text and ask AI to improve it. Open a blank page and ask AI to draft something. Query your entire workspace for answers. It’s invisible until you need it.
The Features That Matter
AI Writing Inside Any Page
Press space on any empty block and Notion AI appears. Ask it to draft, summarize, translate, explain, or rewrite. The output quality is on par with ChatGPT for most tasks, with the added benefit of having your workspace context available.
Q&A Across Your Workspace
This is Notion AI’s killer feature. Ask a question like “What were the key decisions from last week’s product meeting?” and it searches across all your pages, docs, and databases to give you an answer with links to the source pages.
For teams with hundreds or thousands of Notion pages, this transforms how you retrieve information. Instead of clicking through nested pages trying to find something, you just ask.
Database Autofill
Add an AI property to any database, define what you want (summary, category, sentiment, key points), and Notion AI fills it in for every row based on the page content. We use this to auto-generate summaries for our meeting notes database and auto-categorize support tickets.
Custom AI Blocks
Create AI blocks that dynamically update based on other content on the page. For example, a “Key Takeaways” block at the top of a meeting note that automatically updates as you add content below it. It’s subtle but powerful.
Where Notion AI Falls Short
It’s Not a Replacement for Dedicated AI Tools
Notion AI’s writing quality is good for internal documents, but it doesn’t match Jasper for marketing copy or Claude for nuanced long-form content. It’s a productivity enhancer, not a content creation powerhouse.
Q&A Has Limits
The workspace Q&A is impressive but not perfect. It sometimes misses relevant pages, especially if they’re deeply nested or use unconventional formatting. It also can’t access content in shared databases from external integrations.
AI Speed
Notion AI can be slow, especially for longer generations. There’s a noticeable lag compared to ChatGPT or Claude’s web interfaces. Minor, but it adds up over a full workday.
No Offline AI
Notion’s offline mode doesn’t include AI features. If you’re working without internet, you’re back to regular Notion. Not a dealbreaker for most, but worth knowing.
Notion AI vs Standalone AI Tools
Notion AI vs ChatGPT: Use Notion AI for in-context tasks (improving a page, querying your workspace, filling databases). Use ChatGPT for standalone tasks (brainstorming, research, complex reasoning). They complement each other perfectly.
Notion AI vs Jasper: Different tools for different jobs. Jasper is built for marketing teams producing external content. Notion AI is built for teams managing internal knowledge and workflows.
Notion AI vs Coda AI: Both are workspace-with-AI tools. Coda’s AI is more formula/automation-focused. Notion’s AI is more natural language and content-focused. If you’re already in Notion’s ecosystem, there’s no reason to switch.
Is the $10/Month AI Add-On Worth It?
If you use Notion as your primary workspace and you:
- Spend time searching for information across pages → Yes (Q&A alone justifies it)
- Write meeting notes, project briefs, or documentation regularly → Yes
- Manage databases that could benefit from auto-categorization → Yes
- Use Notion casually for personal notes → Probably not
For teams on the Plus plan ($12/member/month), AI is included — so it’s a no-brainer.
Our Setup
Here’s how we use Notion AI daily:
- Meeting notes: AI summarizes into action items after each call
- Project briefs: AI drafts from bullet points, we refine
- Knowledge base: Q&A to find anything across 500+ pages
- Content pipeline: Database autofill categorizes and summarizes draft articles
- Weekly reviews: AI generates team summary from individual standup notes
Total time saved: roughly 4-6 hours per week across our team of 5.
The Bottom Line
Notion AI isn’t the most powerful AI tool available. It’s something better: the most integrated AI tool available. By living inside the workspace where you already spend your day, it removes the context-switching tax that kills productivity with standalone AI tools.
Our Rating: 4.4/5
Half a point lost for occasional slowness and Q&A limitations. But for Notion users, the AI add-on is one of the easiest productivity upgrades you’ll make this year.
